Welspun is going through a major transformation in sustainable manufacturing. We are embedding sustainability and circularity in every realm of our value chain, making it the ethos of what we stand for. We are striving to be the absolute benchmark and global leader in the use of the ESG framework and usage of sustainable textile practices.

Sustainable Sourcing

We prioritize the use of sustainable fabrics (Better Cotton Initiative {BCI}, Organic, Recycled), and produce BCI as well as organic cotton (non-GMO) through our sustainable fabrics farming projects. They cover over 100,000 acres of land, comprise over 75,000 farmworkers, and span over 350 villages. We not only guide farmers with sustainable agronomic but have also provided them with apps for complete farm management solutions. In addition, we are also growing speciality cotton by using the hydroponic technique in collaboration with MIT.

Zero Fresh Water Usage

We installed 30 MLD STP in three areas, namely Gandhidham, Adipur, and Anjar, which treats sewage water and uses zero freshwaters. It led to a vast increase in the quantity of freshwater available in the nearby regions. Besides, we also initiated rain harvesting, which helped to save 3000 million liters of water.

We have nearly 7000 billion litres of water recycled annually, which is equivalent to New York city's water consumption for 5 years.

Energy Conservation

As a mindful sustainable clothing brands supplier, one of the sustainable practices that we have adopted revolves around reducing our carbon footprint. So, we are constantly making efforts to enhance energy efficiency across all our processes, including reusing sludge as fuel and phasing out coal use. 11% of renewable energy is consumed at our factories in Anjar and Vapi, and 11,687 MWH energy is saved, thereby saving 54,859 tons of carbon dioxide. The The turbo-compressor in our Anjar plant leads to a saving of 64 million KWH power. Not only that, but we have also fully switched to LED lights in both these plants. In addition, we conduct energy audits to keep a close check on our carbon footprint.

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)

We conduct LCA of each and every product we introduce into the market in order to understand the impact it will have on the environment and the alternatives to it, including Welspun towels, bedsheets, and rugs. So, it not only forms the basis of how we design our products but also how we educate our customers about how our products will help them decrease the environmental impact.

Green Cover

As a responsible provider of sustainable textiles, we constantly make extensive efforts to expand our green cover, which has resulted in the plantation of 260,000 trees and 600,000 shrubs, and awareness among local communities.

Certifications

We maintain compliance to Oeko-Tex, GOTS, ZDHC, ISO, OHSAS, and to the usage of the Higgs index for monitoring sustainable performance.

Supply Chain

As we focus on reducing our carbon footprint, we have also prioritized the usage of sustainable modes of transportation. Our onsite setup of ancillary supplier units for immediate access also reduces emissions, and our supply chain initiatives have also reduced GHG emissions by 15%. In addition, our Wel-Trak solution ensures complete traceability.

Textile Waste Plastic Recycling

Enabling Circularity

In order to transform from linear to circular systems, we focus on pre as well as post-consumer waste. So, we are involved in plastic recycling for packaging as we have replaced virgin polyester with recycled LDPE, and we also reduce plastic consumption by using textile waste. Recycled paper also accounts for 85% of carton usage at the Anjar factory.

Moreover, horticulture and kitchen waste are used in the biogas plant for producing compost and energy, and PET bottles are recycled at an NGO run by women. We also run a social initiative called Spun, which is not only based on upcycling but also dedicated to women empowerment. At Spun, 2 tonnes of factory waste is recycled every month, which is used by our highly skilled, creative women to create beautiful, handmade products.

Along with this, we keep investing in sustainability-driven innovations by collaborating with start-ups in partnership with Fashion for Good.
